What the free diagnostic includes
A free code scan at a parts store reads stored trouble codes and stops there. That is a useful first clue and a terrible basis for a $2,000 decision. A real diagnostic looks at how the pack behaves under load, which is where a weak battery actually reveals itself.
- 1Full module scan — hybrid control ECU, battery ECU and engine, including the freeze-frame data that shows what the car was doing when the fault set.
- 2Block-level voltage and internal resistance across the pack, so we can see whether one block is dragging the rest down or the whole pack has aged evenly.

What we rule out before we blame the battery
Plenty of cars get sold a hybrid battery they did not need. These are the common misdiagnoses worth ruling out first:

Educational, not a diagnosis
Codes and symptoms narrow down where to look. They do not identify a failed part on their own, and we do not quote a repair from a code alone.
How to prepare, and what happens next
- Note when the symptom happens — cold start, after sitting in the sun, on the freeway, in traffic, or only with the A/C running hard.
- Don't clear the warning light before you come in. Stored data is evidence, and clearing it can cost days of driving to recreate.
- Bring any code printout you already have, even from a parts store.
- Tell us if the 12V has been replaced or jump-started recently — it changes what the stored data means.
